Artist Statement

I find fascination in the emotions created by the inherent pressures of society and how one may respond to facing those expectations. My work focuses on the resentment, empowerment, self-doubt, and insecurity that arise from recognizing these daily strains. I use symbolic elements including figurative body language, personified animals, color, and compositional structures to illustrate the mixed emotions and contradictions that coexist in this social paradigm.

My series of paintings, Burn the Witches, transforms the expectations society places upon individuals into metaphorical scenes or misfortunes often associated with witchcraft, with the witches serving as a reference to external forces influencing one's sense of self. The paintings explore concepts such as embodying idealized qualities, feelings of paranoia and impostor syndrome from unmet expectations, and the overwhelming response to wrongful assumptions about one's identity or potential. The title of the series is derived from a painting depicting a metaphorical burning of these influencing entities.
